Failure Analysis

(5 days)

For: Engineers and operations managers responsible for efficient and dependable utilization of mechanical equipment

Reliable equipment comes from knowledge of the failures of other designs. The equations and methods used in design are the same ones used in failure analysis. In failure analysis, they become the means to prove or disprove a failure theory. You will learn the “method” of failure analysis and the tools used to “test” a failure theory. Numerous examples will illustrate these principles.

By necessity, the course starts with a quick review of force and moments, momentum, pressure, energy (kinetic, potential, pressure and thermal), and stress/strain. They are indispensable to failure analysis, as well as vibration, rotating equipment and welding.

Major Topics Covered:

  • Forces and Dynamics

  • Fluid Mechanics

  • Mechanical Vibrations

  • Mechanics of Materials

  • Fatigue, Fractures and Thermal Stress

  • Analysis in View of Welding, Heat Treatment and Fractography

  • Dynamic Loading

  • Eight Forms of Corrosion
